World Food Day Celebrations at NABI-CIAB, Mohali

National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) in association with Centre of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Chandigarh Chapter and Biotech Club NABI, organized two public lectures to celebrate World Food Day-2019 on October 16th, 2019 at NABI, Mohali.

The event commenced with lamp lighting by Prof. Anupam Varma (Former Vice President, INSA and National Professor & INSA Honorary Scientist), Dr. Devinder Sharma (Food Policy Analyst, Researcher & Writer) and Dr. T.R. Sharma, Executive Director NABI.

Prof. Anupam Varma was the Chief Guest on the occasion and delivered talk on the topic “The Paradox of Hunger and Malnutrition in India”. In his talk he emphasized about the issue of malnutrition, population burst, obesity and its related disorder. He told that Institute like NABI should work in this direction to address some of these issues in holistic manner. He told that fighting against hunger is everyone’s role to achieving #ZeroHunger, but countries, institutions and people need to work together to reach this goal.

Dr. Devinder Sharma was the Guest of Honour and delivered talk on the topic “Healthy Farms, Healthy Diets, Healthy Planet”. Dr. Sharma explained that globally, around 40 percent of the world's food is lost after harvesting due to inadequate storage facility and we should work in this direction to prevent post-harvest losses. He also emphasized that child mortality and malnutrition is the major challenge in our country, which needs to be addressed. He quoted that “The answer to our problem lies in our hand”. He also strongly supported to identify the means so as to enhance the earning of the farmers.

Other highlights of the celebration was showing a video on ““Zero Hunger World" & taking a food pledge by all the participants and distribution of fruits instead of high tea after the session.
